About the Concert
Joseph Haydn’s The Creation is one of the greatest masterpieces in the choral repertoire. First performed to private audiences in Vienna in 1798, Haydn’s work received its UK premiere at the old Covent Garden Theatre two years later in 1800; over 225 years later, it still remains one of the staples for choral societies throughout the world, dazzling audiences with its glorious sound worlds and challenging performers with its virtuosic part writing and rich, intricate word-painting.
Join us to hear one of the leading choirs of the Staffordshire Moorlands perform Haydn's Creation in the stunningly beautiful setting of Leek’s only grade I-listed building. Directed by Ashley Thompson, the Phoenix Singers are joined for this special performance by singers from across the region, creating a fulsome, resonant choral sound that will help Haydn's music sing out in all its glory.
Review by Archdeacon Terry BloorAll Saints', Leek, reverberated with very fine singing on the evening of 30 May. Under wonderful direction, the Phoenix Singers, together with three RNCM soloists and the Phoenix Festival Orchestra, thrilled a capacity audience with their masterful delivery of Haydn's 'The Creation'.
From the first recitative with chorus, it was obvious that the preparations for this performance were going to pay dividends; the evening just got better and better! The choir's tone was colorful, open and clear more than matching Haydn's often challenging work. An enchanting balance during the duets and trios with chorus, was struck with consummate ease and enhanced the listening pleasure.
Altogether, the performance of this oratorio was uplifting to the satisfaction of everyone listening, and by the observed facial expressions and body language, equally so for singers and musicians alike. Thanks for such a great evening!
